Update: Tar mound removed and fixed permanently by Councils’ contractor on Sunday, 20th Dec.

Eleven months after learning about a dangerous tar mound in Bankart Street Raglan, Waikato District Council say they will be making permanent repairs on Sunday 20th.

Last summer a number of people tripped up on it. One elderly lady injured herself badly and is still on the waiting list for Waikato Hospital to operate on her injury.

The tar mound has got worse since last summer. There has been recent work to again patch the pothole patch that patched the hole after the top was cut off the tar mound.

Last summer the Council first painted the tar mound white, then took the top off it, before finally removing the mound and patching the big pothole.

We asked WDC if they had any plans to do a permanent repair on this busy point where pedestrians cross Bankart St, before large numbers of summer visitors arrive?

A Council spokesperson said, “In response to your query about the tar mound on Bankart Street in Raglan: Council staff will be assessing it today (Friday 18th December) and will programme repair for Sunday afternoon.”

When asked why they were doing the work on a Sunday, the busiest day of the week in Raglan, the Council said, “We want to get this resolved before the break. The method we are employing to fix it requires a specialist team with specialist equipment and the earliest that they can be made available is Sunday.”
