The permanent roadworks and one-way system traffic system that was to have started on Monday 16th has started early from Friday 13th December. The one way traffic and roadworks area starts just after the Cliff Street public toilet block.
Waikato District Council are using a roadworks loophole in the law to introduce a one-way traffic system in Raglan’s Cliff Street. The new signs were to have been unveiled on the 16th December. However a road marking contractor painted direction arrows on the road surface several days early on Thursday 12th. The council then put this post on its FB:
UPDATE: 13 December – Due to road markings being painted on Cliff St ahead of schedule we’ve had to start the one-way system earlier than planned. It is operating from now to avoid confusion over the weekend. Our apologies for any inconvenience caused.
Raglan – a temporary one-way traffic management plan system for Cliff St will be starting from Monday 16 December for the summer.
What we want to achieve is an improvement in traffic and pedestrian safety, a reduction in congestion, and to address issues with access to residents’ property.
A targeted consultation process was recently carried out about this and it was made clear that affected property owners supported it.
But a permanent one-way system would only be confirmed by a resolution process under the public spaces bylaw in the new year

Unfortunately the council did not appear to tell its staff of the change so signs on posts remained covered up. Late on Friday a concerned resident peeled off the cover up strips on post signs, so now at least the road markings and the post signs are consistent.
The council has still not released an official statement on the change.
