David Engwicht is considered one of the world‘s most innovative thinkers on place making, citizen engagement and creative problem solving. His interest in Community engagement and placemaking began in 1987 after attending a public meeting in his home town, where he opposed the ‘upgrading‘ of a major road. He became fascinated on how the design of cities and towns impacted on community life. Since that time David has travelled worldwide encouraging communities to help solve their own problems.

David is an artist, street philosopher, communicator, inventor and keen observer of life. He counts his lack of formal education and his marginal experiences as a child as two of his greatest assets. He has inspired the community in Paihia to undertake a project to redesign a town public space with excellent results. The community have since gone on to rebuild the public toilets which are now a tourist attraction for the town.

While working with the community in Palmerston North David developed a Place Making Programme which involves DIY Kits for professionals. retailers and residents. Council has signed up to this programme and has implemented the programme in Ngaruawahia. The Raglan Community Board have expressed an interest in implementing the Place Making programme in Raglan and have asked that David be invited to visit the town to talk about his ideas.

In the Ngaruawahia office of Waikato District Council on Monday 11 November, David will be presenting his programme to the Council and Community Board members.

Arrangements have been made for him to visit Raglan on Tuesday 12 November 2013 at 10am. The focus will be on revitalising the central area and Community Board members and the general public will be encouraged to attend. For further information view https://www.creative-communities.com/.
