The Whaingaroa Whanua launched Raglan Community Environment Day 2011 after a karakia from Sean Ellison. Because of the bridge works, the base for the celebrations was moved slightly South. The marquees of the Community House, DOC, Whaingaroa Environment Centre, a fundraiser by Westpac and Xtreme Waste looked very cosy with a smaller area available.
Later in the day local bands Twisted Timber, Hand Me Downs and Jacquemo took to the stage along with a demonstration zumba dance and a kapa haka. And for the children there was sandcastle building, sand digs.
Early in the day there was concern that the Raft Race would be cancelled due to the tsunami alert, but there was no sign of a tsunami in the harbour.
What a great day and what a great turnout of artists and audience. Lots of families and friends who came showing just what they enjoy about living in Raglan. Its not about ‘economic excellence’ as the WDC try to enforce but about community spirit and caring for the environment we live in.
