The weekend of 28/29 November will see people around the world calling for bold action on climate change, timed to coincide with the international climate conference in Paris.

For Waikato that’s 11am at Garden Place, Hamilton on Sunday November 29 for a march to Ferrybank Park for a festival and picnic. For Raglan it’s 8am at the Water Tower bus shelter to cycle, or 9.30am at top of James St and then 10am at Te Uku Hall to car share, to join the Hamilton march.

So far commitments from world governments just aren’t adding up. The fact that we can’t just catch a bus to the march is one example of the way government is failing to help us save carbon emissions. The message of the 28-29 November marches will be to stop digging up and burning fossil fuels, replace them with renewables and plant more forests.

Just yesterday the World Meteorological Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations, issued a report saying the years 2011-2015 have been the warmest five-year period on record. It says heatwaves are now ten times as common as in pre-industrial times. About 4,500 died in heatwaves in India and Pakistan last summer, many more than have been killed by terrorism, yet ther is not the same urgency to act.

This is an occasion when numbers will count. The more who march, the more likely the government is to lift its targets and its contribution in Paris. Please come if you can, and encourage people you know to join in. Together we can make a difference!
