Jennie Hayman
Candidate for Waikato Regional Council
Late in 2015 I became aware that the two current Councillors for the Waikato constituency would probably not stand again. I therefore attended some WRC Council and committee meetings to observe and to learn about current issues. Council processes are not new to me, of course.
I was a Councillor in Franklin and later Waikato District, but did not stand for re-election in 2013, instead taking the opportunity to do further study, as well as assisting community organisations with their submissions on the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan. I also caught up on a few jobs around the farm, including my revegetation programme.
While I have never directly represented the people of Raglan/Whaingaroa before, I know something of the community’s concerns, particularly those associated with the environment, as well as public transport and future growth.
I am keen to see that the Regional Council performs the key legislated functions, especially those relating to the environment, but that it does so without imposing unnecessary regulation (and associated costs). While I cannot single-handedly reduce costs, I can raise the concerns of communities, and advocate on your behalf. My science background, knowledge of resource management, and down-to-earth common sense will be useful in pursuing sound, sustainable solutions. I am under no illusion that this is an easy task, as positions often become entrenched, but I aim to try very hard.
Most of all, I need to hear from communities so that I understand your concerns, your questions, your aims. Please contact me on jennie4waikatoregion@gmail.com
