Body found at Papanui Point

A body was found at Papanui Point, near Ruapuke on the evening of Sunday 21st.

A police spokesperson said the body was located on rocks at the northern end of Ruapuke Beach around 2.20pm. A member of the public located the body and notified police.

The discovery comes after two fishermen, Olson Canatoy, 52, and Eric Dabalos, 44, failed to return from a fishing trip to the Ruapuke area on October 31.

At that time the search utilised a drone, and the Police Eagle helicopter, looking at the area around Papanui Point.

Papanui Point is a dangerous fishing spot with at least 22 recorded fatalities over the years after fishermen fall off the rocks, or are swept into the water by large waves.
