Aug 17-22: Cable exposed by erosion on Ngārunui Beach to be reburied

Waikato District Council has advised that work is due to start on Tuesday 17th August on work to rebury the Vodafone Aqualink Cable which has been exposed by erosion at Ngārunui Beach. There’ll be a digger on site and work is expected to take five days, weather permitting.

Cordons will be in place round the work areas. The public will still be able to use the beach at all times.

The Aqualink cable installed in 2001 is a backhaul transmission cable used to transport telecommunications traffic between the main centres in the North Island. It is not designed nor is it suitable for connecting to individual customers or communities – it is designed to provide point to point high speed /high capacity intercity trunk connections.

Recent erosion on Ngārunui Beach has also caused problems for the surf life saving lookout on the beach as reported in the Waikato Times.
