Ashes not an issue in Raglan

A recent Waikato District Council media release covered an issue around unapproved burial of ashes in Waikato cemeteries.  But after checking with Council staff the Raglan Website was advised that unauthorised burial of ashes is not an issue at the Raglan cemetery.

A Council staff member said, “I have checked with our facilities team and we are not aware of any cremated burials being done at Raglan Cemetery without the council’s approval.

 In regards to ashes being spread on the beach, the council has no control over ashes being spread at sea or on the beaches.

At Wainui Reserve we understand there is a memorial walk where some ashes may be sprinkled around special trees. Apparently people can purchase the right to do this for a small donation to the Friends of Wainui Committee.”  {See comment below:  “The donation is $150 to plant a tree with a plaque.”}

  1. Just to clarify Council’s “small donation to the Friends of Wainui “. The donation is $150 to plant a tree with a plaque.
