Raglan’s Old School Arts Centre is set to host one of its most ambitious exhibitions at the end of this month.
365 Degrees. A Moment, a Day, a Year showcases a year’s worth of photography by Raglan writer and mixed media artist Katherine Parrott. As the name implies that’s 365 photos and yes, every single one of them will be in the show.
Katherine started her huge undertaking on 22 March 2013 aiming to capture one moment that summed up each day. She says, “Taking a photograph every day becomes a practice and an intention that works both to help me notice the beauty in every day and to create it. Looking through the viewfinder hones my vision, makes me notice things I would otherwise miss. As a big-picture person, it has helped me see details and tiny snatches of beauty that otherwise may have passed my global brain by. I look back on the images and think I’m so glad I captured that.”
Living rurally near Raglan, many of Katherine’s photos feature local landscapes, people and places. Her 365 days will finish just one week before the exhibition opens. She comments, “You end up constantly looking for the moment that will sum up each day: the image that will express what has been happening, what I’m feeling or what I have to say. Often, this refers to the so-called small or everyday parts of life. For me, it is about consciously making the ordinary and everyday as beautiful and extraordinary as I can.”
No stranger to the world of exhibiting, Katherine is an award-winning quilt maker and has shown her art both nationally and internationally. She has been documenting her 365 project on social media and through her website, where images from each day, along with their respective stories, can be found.
365 Degrees. A Moment, a Day, a Year opens on Friday 28 March, 6.30pm at the Old School Arts Centre on Stewart Street, Raglan. All welcome: live music, canapés and cash bar. The exhibition runs daily until Sunday 13 April, 10am-3pm. For a preview of Katherine’s work, head to her website: www.katherineparrott.com.
