Apr 6: Ramblers walk to the wind farm from Vandy Rd

On the 6th April, Raglan Ramblers will be taking a seven kilometre walk to the Te Uku windfarm from Vandy Rd. They think that the old road should be much less muddy than it was last July. The route was originally a Maori track from Moerangi to Karamu. In 1863 about 500 warriors used it to get from Kawhia to the
Waikato war.

Phillip Vandy bought 500 acres of bush before 1904. About 1919 the Public Works Department cut a six-foot track, from the southeast of the plateau to the head of the Makomako valley, known as the Black Horse Ridge track (a black stallion was often seen there at the time). For about 10 years, it was a well-used droving route to the Waikato, until the road to Makomako opened. ‘The Junction’ with Plateau Rd is now almost
invisible, marked only by a plastic waymark. Please bring your lunch.

Walks usually start 9am, Wednesdays from Wainui Rd car park (next to Raglan Fire Station).  There is no membership – the only cost is 10 cents per km to share travel costs.  Details from John 825 7866.   Check out Raglan Ramblers on Facebook

Each “Rambler” accepts responsibility for any accident or injury received while travelling, or walking over private property. Be prepared – carry enough food, clothing, first aid kit for emergencies and preferably a mobile phone.
