On April 19th, Raglan Ramblers will be enjoying a new walk near Te Uku Landing. Please bring your lunch.
The 17 acre Te Uku Domain, on the south bank of the Waitetuna, was originally a ‘Landing’ reserve, but, due to the rapids, the landing was built 600m downstream and the reserve farmed since 1918. In 1902 a shed was built at the landing. In 1916 timber for Vanhoutte’s new home was shipped from Onehunga to Raglan, barged to the landing and carted to Hillersden. Logs were floated down the Waitetuna to a boom half a mile below the landing, where they were chained together and hauled to the Raglan mill by steam launch. Several rimu logs were later found in a riverside swamp. In 1918 Porter’s quarry and limeworks opened just below the landing.
Walks usually start 9am, Wednesdays from Wainui Rd car park (next to Raglan Fire Station). There is no membership – the only cost is 10 cents per km to share travel costs. Details from John 825 7866. Check out Raglan Ramblers on Facebook
Each “Rambler” accepts responsibility for any accident or injury received while travelling, or walking over private property. Be prepared – carry enough food, clothing, first aid kit for emergencies and preferably a mobile phone.
