Another sewage spill into Raglan Harbour

Via a terse message on its own Facebook, Waikato District Council has announced another sewage spill into Raglan Harbour.

Posted at about 7pm on Tuesday 18th August the message said:

150819Sign-No-swimming-039648“Sorry Raglanites – there’s been a spillage from a man hole into the harbour.

Another case where tree roots have grown through the pipes, but in a different section of the pipeline.

Our people are onsite and the blockage has been cleared, with no further spill going into the harbour. We’ve notified Waikato Regional Council and stakeholders.

Signage is up, but a reminder not to swim, fish or collect shellfish in the Lorenzen Bay/Greenslade Rd area until further notice.”

Many Raglanders are asking what they get for their wastewater rates. In the current financial year, Raglanders will be paying $728.46 per property for wastewater rates.  With well over 1,000 properties paying this rate in Raglan and on the Whaanga Coast, the Council is collecting about three-quarters of a million dollars each year in wastewater rates.

Raglan 23 website is running a poll on WDC’s management of the Raglan wastewater system. As of 19th August, 77% says that management needs to be improved a lot.

  1. A fortnight ago they said they were going to use CCTV to check for roots. Presumably they’ve not got round to it. At least they’ve been quick to put up warning notices this time.
