Today work commences on building the replacement Kopua footbridge. The first sign of construction activity is a Waikato District Council sign on the jetty green area announcing the project. The new bridge is being built to the north of the present bridge.

The $2.6 million bridge is being built by Waikato District Council largely funded from revenues coming from the Harbour Endowment properties in Bow Street and Wallis Street.
HEB Structures is building the bridge for the WDC. The main construction base will be on the Kopua side where HEB will build a compound to enclose their construction equipment. During the construction period the changing sheds will be closed. There will also be safety restrictions on boats using the Opotoru Estuary.
