Sunny weather for Western Shears

The Western Shears, the national lambshearing championships were held on Saturday at the Raglan Rugby Grounds starting with the veteran, junior, intermediate and senior heats before the Open heats started at midday.  A crowd of over 100 people gathered to watch the shearing on a hot Raglan day.

Open final (20 lambs): John Kirkpatrick (Napier) 14min 52sec, 59.55pts, 1; Paul Avery (Stratford) 15min 31sec, 60.5pts, 2; Cam Ferguson (Waipawa) 15min 59sec, 63.1pts, 3.

Senior final (12 lambs): Wi Ngarangione (Gisborne) 12min 50sec, 56.333pts, 1; Tipene Te Whata (Tautoro, Far North) 12min 12sec, 54.767pts, 2*; Bevan Guy (Kaeo) 11min 54sec, 55.2pts, 3*.

Intermediate final (4 lambs): Jack Fagan (Te Kuiti) 6min 14sec, 34.45pts, 1; Damon Macdonald (Coroglen) 5min 52sec, 37.6pts, 2; Robert Davidson (Ireland) 4min 59sec, 35.95pts, 3*.

Junior final (3 lambs): David Gordon (Masterton) 5min 39sec, 30.283pts, 1; Heilin Thomas (Wales) 5min 38sec, 34.9pts, 2; Natalie Crisp (England) 6min 11sec, 37.55pts, 3.
