A quick update on the fight against the  fast-track approvals bill that could see Trans Tasman Resources being given the green light to mine the seabed of the South Taranaki Bight. If it gets that green light, all bets are off for the rest of our coastlines as it could set a dangerous precedent.  The good news is that it appears the government is possibly walking back the worst parts of the bill, sounding conciliatory at least on the unbridled power it would give to three Ministers: Chris Bishop, Shane Jones and Simeon Brown. But we want the bill thrown out altogether, right?

The pushback has come from unlikely quarters such as the independent government watchdogs: the Ombudsman, the Auditor General, the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment and even the Ministry for the Environment says it contains “significant risks.” The government wavering is the direct result of the strong opposition coming from so many of you, those of you who’ve signed petitions and sent in submissions: you are being heard.  If you have a spare moment watch the Select Committee hearings live online (there’s two on at once) – it’s truly inspirational!  KASM hasn’t given ours yet.  But let’s be clear: this process would be the last time we’re listened to if this bill goes ahead. We don’t want the bill tinkered with: we want it thrown out. It’s undemocratic, it could lead to seabed mining, environmental disaster and the way it ignores the government’s obligations under Te Tiriti is unbelievably bad.

Join KASM on the streets of Auckland on June 8 for the Stop The Fast Track, March for Nature 1pm Aotea Square. Come and march with the KASM team!

Coalition Against the Fast Track (CAFT)

Media is also digging into the issues of corruption. Check out the latest on Shane Jones’ undeclared dinner with several mining company executives on the West Coast who want to get their projects across the line.   Many of the communities fighting these projects are small, and so are the organisations supporting them, like KASM, so we’ve joined up with many of them to form a coalition, CAFT.  Last week we called for Prime Minister Luxon to remove Shane Jones from his Resources portfolio: it’s clear he’s corruptible. It’s time to step up the fight: March with us! (KASM bus from Raglan) On June 8, this opposition will hit the streets of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland in the  Stop the Fast Track, March for Nature. Some of you may remember the Ours Not Mine march that played a pivotal role in stopping mining on conservation land:  this could do the same. Sign up on the website, or on the Facebook Page, or just come along.
