May 24: Ramblers head southeast of Te Awamutu

Raglan Ramblers news

Next Wednesday we will be trying again to take up a long standing kind invitation to  walk on the farm of a friend of ours, Vic Richards. Hopefully the weather will be a bit kinder this time.

His farm is southeast of Te Awamutu, off the Cambridge road. It includes a walk over paddocks, climbs to two high pa sites and a ridge walk, so will be fairly strenuous and will be muddy after all our recent rain.

It also has valleys with quite extensive planting and a flock of peafowl! The views over the Waikato and towards Taranaki are spectacular.

It is very near Rangiaowhia so for those with an interest in history a short detour on the way home is a possibility.

Directions:

From Raglan take our usual route to Te Awamutu via SH39.

In Te Awamutu take the first exit at the roundabout at the end of Alexandra street (the main street) onto Cambridge road.

Carry on along this road, over the roundabout with SH3.

After leaving Te Awatutu turn right at the 5th right hand turning  (LONG RD)

Bear Left onto CHAMBERLAIN RD

Turn right onto PARKLANDS RD

Vic’s  house is at 481 PARKLANDS RD (it has an orange roof)

DRIVE PAST THE HOUSE AND PARK ON THE LEFT ON THE WIDE GRASS VERGE JUST AFTER A STOCK YARD – hopefully this will not be too muddy.

From Hamilton, suggest the best route would be SH3 to Te Awamutu then left onto Cambridge Rd and as above.

It will take an hour to drive from Raglan so suggest Hamiltonians meet us at this parking place at 10:00 am
