Aug 15: LIVE & LOCAL at the Old School

LIVE & LOCAL Sunday 15 August 7pm at Raglan Old School Arts Centre, 5 Stewart Street, RaglanEntry by koha – pay what suits you. Upstairs in the Theatre Workshop.

An exciting new series of monthly concerts is starting at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre on Sunday August 15. “Live & Local” is an initiative arising from the Ministry of Social Development’s Covid Resilience Funding.

Each concert will feature sets from three outstanding local acts. Featured performers at the first concert are singer-songwriter Joe Wilson, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Em River and local folk duo Wilkie Mac.

Joe is well known to locals for his blend of alt-folk, indie and Americana written with a timeless 70’s style.

EmRiver will be playing a mix of her own tunes using a collection of different instruments including flute and the African ngoni. Em has been making music for decades, and is looking forward to sharing some of her songs with you.

Wilkie Mac duo (Lynne Wilkins and Michael Mackinnon) are longtime members of the Raglan music scene and have just returned from a tour of the lower N Island. They have just released “The Guinea Stamp”, a recording of a collection of songs by Robert Burns, which they will feature in their set.

Performers had reduced opportunities to perform last year due to Covid and the Raglan Old School Arts Centre had fewer concerts. The MSD funding is being used to give local performers a showcase and opportunity to perform, also potentially to try out new material or new collaborations. “Live and Local” is open to musicians (any acoustic or semi-acoustic genre), songwriters, comedians, poets and anything that can be performed on a small stage. Featured spots are 30 mins and there are also shorter spots available.

“Live & Local” will be a regular event on the third Sunday of every month for the rest of this year. If you are interested in performing in future concerts, contact Penni: music@raglanartscentre.co.nz
