How to drive safety on freshly laid chipseal

It can be unnerving to travel over freshly laid chipseal and hear loose chips rattling under the car. However the instinct to drive either too fast or too slow will not do your vehicle, other people’s vehicles or the road any good.

To drive safely on chipseal that has just been laid, we ask drivers to:

  • Get ready; slow down to the posted temporary speed limit BEFORE you reach the new chipseal.
  • Leave space; allow an extra car’s length distance to develop between your car and the vehicle in front.
  • 30kph is okay; drive steadily at the temporary speed limit – usually 30kph on the first day, 50kph in the next two days (or while the temporary speed limit is posted).
  • Avoid braking; don’t ride the brakes and avoid getting so close to the car in front that you have to brake suddenly. Tap the brakes lightly but only if you have to.
  • Be patient; don’t pick up speed until after you have passed out of the coned zone.

If everyone applies these measures, it reduces the likelihood of damage to paintwork and windscreens.

What about access to my property?

If your entranceway is within our work zone, access to properties may be limited when we carry out some of the works. Wait time to get access should be no longer than ten minutes. Please speak with traffic crews on site who will navigate you through the works to your property and will also be able to tell you what times access will be restricted.
