ANZAC commemorations bolstered

ANZAC commemorations in Ngaruawahia and Raglan in Apri] will be bolstered with funding from the Waikato District Council.

At its March meeting the Council’s Discretionary and Funding Committee voted to allocate $1,800 to the Raglan Returned and Services Association to assist with the cost of running the annual Anzac Day parade and ceremony at the Bow Street cenotaph.

Sixty-seven ANZAC commemorative flags will line Great South Road in Ngaruawahia throughout April thanks to an allocation of $1,500 to the Ngaruawahia RSA Memorial Club to cover the cost of erecting the flags in support of the 2016 Ngaruawahia Field of Remembrance project and ANZAC Day commemorations on 25 April.

Other events the committee voted to support included the annual Turangawaewae regatta, with an allocation of $7,500 made to the Turangawaewae Marae Committee; the Onewhero Society of Performing Arts’ staging of the Vicar of Dibley in Onewhero in April, with an allocation of $1,356.75; and the biannual Huntly Wearable Arts event at the Huntly College Hall on 1 October 2016, with an allocation of $4,205.96 made to Let’s Get Together Huntly, an umbrella group under the Waikato Enterprise Agency.

A number of groups in the Council’s rural wards also won funding to assist with maintaining rural amenities.  Woodlands Historic Homestead, Gardens and Function Centre was allocated $4,000 towards the cost of purchasing a new water fountain; Glen Afton Citizens Sports Club was allocated $3,859.33 towards the cost of replacing the clubroom’s entrance doors; the Pokeno Community Hall Committee was allocated $7,000 to assist with purchasing new tables and chairs; and the Karioitahi Community Centre was allocated $4,267.95 to assist with purchasing new tables, chairs and curtains.
