Movie lovers from Dargaville to Hokitika are invited to don their best Swannie, polish up their gumboots, and walk the ‘red carpet’ at their local cinema in a syndicated nationwide premiere event for Taika Waititi’s new film, ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’.

More than 40 cinemas across New Zealand have signed up to screen the movie at the same time on 30 March, and will compete to host the best local premiere for the film in the country.

The cinema that creates the best buzz on social media (via the hashtag #wilderpeople) will win a grand prize of a visit from director Taika Waititi, and stars of the film Julian Dennison and Sam Neill, during the opening weekend (2-3 April).

“We want to share our premiere with as many Kiwis as we can, and are looking forward to seeing everyone on opening night,” says Waititi.

Cinema owners are encouraged to decorate their foyers in a ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’-inspired theme for the big event, and partner with their community to make this a night to remember.

A  live stream from the official Auckland premiere – including interviews with the cast and crew – will play ahead of the film.

‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’ is based on Barry Crump’s novel, ‘Wild Pork and Watercress’ and follows Ricky (Dennison), a defiant young city kid who finds himself on the run with his cantankerous foster uncle (Neill) in the New Zealand bush. A national manhunt ensues, and the two are forced to put aside their differences and work together in this hilarious and heartfelt adventure.

The film opens in wide release on 31 March.
