It was a perfect winter Raglan Whaingaroa night to reflect on Matariki. Over 200 people joined in for the Matariki bonfire – Ahi Whakaata | Fire of Reflection on Saturday the 11th July. Warmly dressed for the 8 degree temperatures people sampled the kai provided before the bonfire was lit. Pulled pork sliders, mussel fritters and smoked eel were on the menu for a koha. The event organised by the Raglan Chamber of Commerce was held at the Rokikore sandspit past the skate park.

Kaumatua Sean Ellinson described the meaning  of Matariki, first in Maori then in English. He explained how Matariki was a time to reflect on the past, celebrate the present and to ignite the Future. Then Sean said a karakia which was followed by a blessing from Rhonda Chung. Members of the Raglan Chamber of Commerce then lit the bonfire. Bundles of cabbage tree leaves were provided for people to put onto the fire and send out a wish or a dream up to the stars.
