UPDATE: We noticed on 7th March that this leak had been fixed.

Although a number of people have let the Waikato Council know about a bad water leak in Raglan, the Council say they are not planning to stop the leak. Local shop owners have now built a passage from the leak to the drain to stop the water ponding in the car park and lane.

At the Raglan Community Board meeting held on 11th November 2014, WDC GM Tony Whitaker said that fixing water leaks was a priority for the Council. On the 17th January the same Council declared a Level 2 Water Alert level placing severe restrictions on using sprinklers and watering systems.

The leak that is being allowed to continue is behind the Banteay Shrey Cafe in Magic Viper Lane  next to the Raglan Chronicle office at 2 Wainui Rd. Council staff told me that the leak is on private property and they have been unable to find out who the owner of the property is.  The Council’s own rating database shows the area concerned to be owner occupied so it should be relatively easy for the Council to make contact with the owner.  Where a customer ignores advice from the Council to repair an on-going leak, the Council may repair the leak and charge the customer all associated cost as provided in the Local Government Act 2002. It appears this option isn’t being used even though there is a Level 2 Water Alert.

  1. These are commercial properties so theoretically they should all be on water meters anyway. I suspect the leak is on the WDC side of the supply point even though it is on private property.

  2. PJ – Manu Bay was a well frequented traditional fishing ground. The original name of the area is Waikeri. Manu Bay is named after Manukapua Paekau. He escaped to Whaingaroa from Rangiriri during the 1863 war and lived there until early in the 20th century. Manu Awa Tukiri, a whangai son of Manukapua, had numerous children (the late Bill, Betty, Ben and Mark Tukiri who grew up on the land above the bay.
