The proposal to expand the Raglan CBD announced by the Waikato District Council back in May 2014 has been quietly progressing. Discussions with property owners were held in late 2014 and now the Waikato Council is having a community open day on February 5. The official name for the proposal is Plan Change 14.

The proposal would rezone the southern side of Bankart St from Living to Business along with the adjacent properties around the corner in Wainui Rd (8,10,12). A similar change plus a Town Centre overlay is proposed for eastern part of Wallis St (9,11, 13, 15A, 15B, 17, 17A, 17B, 19) next to the CBD.

Rezoning changes are also proposed for part of the Tasman Lands property on SH 23 Rural Zone to Light Industrial and also parts of Wainui Rd, next to Poihakena Marae to be rezoned from Coastal to Pa Zone.

In 2014 Council GM Tony Whittaker told the councillors that, “The changes proposed have been requested as a result of community consultation and/or individual land owner requests. The zoning reflects the current or proposed use of the properties.

The community open day will be held at the Raglan Bowling Club on Thursday 5th February from 3pm to 8pm. A spokesperson for the Waikato Council said, “The purpose of the open day is to provide the opportunity for the general Raglan community to review the proposed rezoning, ask questions and provide feedback to Council.”

  1. Hi Rodger. I just wanted to let you know that the council has a huge water truck watering the newly formed grass berms up and down James Street TWICE a day, sometimes, as today, in the heat of the day. This has been going on for at least a week and seems like an expensive way to get grass growing, not to mention unwise water use. They sprayed the paper-fertilizer-grass seed slurry then the watering began in earnest.

    1. Just like last year when they had water sprinklers for the newly laid turf on the Domain when everywhere else had water restrictions.

  2. Now Rangitahi has the go ahead, will progress be made on the CBD? Before expanding the CBD, Wi Neera St should be sorted out (see Street Talk in today’s Chronicle).
I’ve yet to fully read the Rangitahi decision, but haven’t yet spotted a reason to make Opotoru the only sub-standard road allowed in the whole district, or address how to avoid the other subdivisions becoming ratepayer liabilities. Are they in there? Are they a reason to appeal?
