Movies at the Old School: Sunshine on Leith
By Emma Brooks, Raglan Old School Arts Centre
“Sunshine on Leith, a film based around 13 Proclaimers songs, will give you tingles of happiness.” The Telegraph.
Adapted from the smash hit stage play of the same name, and directed by Dexter Fletcher, Sunshine on Leith follows the relationship dramas of three couples in Edinburgh.
Davy and Ally are two young squaddies, newly returned to Edinburgh from Afghanistan. Ally is coming back to a long-running relationship with Davy’s sister Liz, who in turn sets up Davy with her friend Yvonne.
Meanwhile Liz and Davy’s father Rab (Peter Mullan) is all set to celebrate his 25th wedding anniversary to wife Jean (Jane Horrocks), when a secret from his past throws their lives into turmoil.
The film’s romances play out against the backdrop of picture-postcard perfect Edinburgh and the soundtrack of the Proclaimers.
“This is bright, breezy and charming entertainment at its best, even if you’re not a mad fan of the musical genre.” 3.5/5 stars. New Zealand Herald.
