The number of vegan options at Raglan cafes is limited, so those with an interest in vegan food (vegans, vegetarians and omnivores) have, for several years, been getting together to experience the range of tastes which make vegan food much more appetising and healthy than the traditional meat and two veg. The first of 2014 is at noon on Saturday 1 February at Lorenzen Bay.
Health, wealth, environment and animal welfare concerns, as well as flavour are the main reasons for eating more vegan food. Most vegan food is low in saturated fats. A kilo of lentil costs $6, a kilo of beef $16, but the lentil has more protein and less fat. Walnuts have more Omega 3 than fish, and soya almost as much. A kilo of beef adds to global warming about as much as using 10 litres of petrol. Most chickens and eggs still come from caged birds. As for the flavour, come and experience the variety and maybe meet some new people.
