Better weather is expected for today Friday 13th September after Thursday’s downpour with Raglan receiving 58mm of rain. The extreme weather caused a slip on SH 23 which blocked part of the road just East of Lorenzen Bay Rd leaving one lane open. This SH 23 slip was cleared by late afternoon. Flooding resulted in Old Mountain Rd being closed. Many streams in Whaingaroa flooded over their banks.
Areas of the Bush Park in Wainui Reserve also flooded. The Waikato District Council put a plastic tape across the entrance track warning of the danger. The bridge over the stream at the foot of the Harbour Care nursery was covered with debris swept onto it, though the stream was about a metre below the bridge on Thursday afternoon. Harbour Care staff were moving trees to higher ground, as in the flood a couple of months ago they lost a huge number of young trees.
Some of the recent plantings in the Bush Park by Friends of Wainui Reserve were washed away by the flooding. After the flooding subsided, Friends of Wainui recovered the trees and replanted them.
