Course to help boaties cross Raglan bar

Media Release: Coaastguard Raglan, Tuesday, 12 February, 2013 – 17:05

Coastguard Raglan is holding its popular Raglan bar crossing course on Sunday 10 March.

The course is designed to equip boaties with the knowledge they need to safely cross the notoriously hazardous bar.

The course starts at 8.30am at the fire station on Wainui Road, Raglan.

The cost is $30 for those who pre-register and $35 (cash payment only) for those who turn up on the day.

Lifejackets are required as a trip out to the bar is included.

Waikato Regional Council harbourmasters will be providing safe boating resources and regional harbour guides to participants.

“The Raglan bar can be very tricky and hazardous to negotiate and there have been a number of serious capsizing incidents in recent years,” the council’s navigation safety programme manager Nicole Botherway said.

“We urge anyone intending to cross the bar – who hasn’t already learnt how to do so – to attend the Coastguard Raglan course, which helps ensure boaties are more aware of how to negotiate it as safely as possible.”

Numbers on the course are limited. People can pre-register for the course with Coastguard Raglan’s secretary Brigid Green on 07 825 8089 or email raglancoastguard@gmail.com.
