The combination of hot weather and visitors for the holiday weekend has pushed water usage in Raglan up to well over 2000 cubic metres a day. On Sunday 27th January, a very warm day and with many visitors in town, water usage climbed to over 2,400 cubic metres a day.
And in Hamilton, water use surged to almost 80 million litres on Monday – up from about 74 million the previous Monday – the city’s highest of the summer, and with warm weather forecast fro another week, the city council is urging restraint. So far Hamilton residents have ignored council pleas to curb use. Hamilton city council officials say they are looking at putting Hamilton up to Level 3. And with Raglan being part of the Hamilton Smartwater marketing campaign we are likely to be included.
Richard Bax GM Water & Facilities for Waikato District said, “Water demand last week increased significantly, including Raglan. Its great to hear people are managing water use, but they will need to do more to avoid a move to Alert Level 3 later this week. We are very vulnerable to any minor fault in the network and with pumps running hard, this is quite possible. We don’t want people in higher areas to run out of water.”

Raglan is currently on Level 2 water restrictions:
LEVEL 2: Sprinklers and irrigation systems can be used from 6am till 8am and 6pm till 8pm, but only on alternate days: even-numbered addresses can water at those times on even dates only, the reverse for odd-numbered addresses. Hand-held hosing is allowed at restriction levels 2. There is no restriction on commercial usage.
