Twenty prospective tenants are interested in the new building on Raglan Wharf.  A Waikato District Council officer told Tuesday’s meeting of the Raglan Community Board  that the Council was negotiating with one major tenant and had another  twenty businesses interested. The new building, a replacement for the one that burnt down in 2010 has stood empty since it was officially opened a month ago. The building cost the Council $1.9 million.

Recent letters to the Raglan Chronicle have suggested that the spaces in the building are too large and will be difficult to let.

Board Chair Rodger Gallagher said, “It is welcome news that Council has so many tenants lined up.  The Board had proposed to Council that if some tenancies in the building were still empty at Christmas, they could be used for a temporary community purpose.  For example  for pop-up art exhibitions or by the Council to promote Civil Defence. While it appears this temporary use won’t be necessary, if people have a firm proposal the Council Facilities Manager has said he should be approached.”

  1. While the new wharf buildings appear to resemble the old buildings it appears on closer inspection to be a retail shopping mall rather than catering for traditional seafaring activities usually associated with wharves. Why is that?

    1. I don’t know Linda. The community was quite clear that it wanted a working wharf. Perhaps WDC will provide an answer.
