The Raglan New Year’s Eve Parade organised by Raglan Lions triumphed over Saturday’s rain with only a light sprinkle coming down while the floats were on parade. Lions President, Bob MacLeod confirmed in the afternoon that the forty-year old parade tradition would not be stopped by the rain. His message was posted on the Raglan Website and shared around Facebook and Twitter to ensure everybody knew the parade was on.
After assembling and judging in Wallis Street, the parade started into Bow Street led by the Raglan and District Highland Pipe Band. In addition to the theme floats Raglan services such as Surf Life Saving, Fire Service, Operational Support and Coast Guard took part with traffic safety under the eye of the Maori Wardens.
Prizes were awarded for the floats with a theme in the categories of Community, Sustainable, Educate and Safety. The judges also awarded a special prize and prizes for a bike or anything on wheels. The crowd favourite was the Big Fat Gypsy Wedding float entered by the Motor Neurone Support Group. This float was awarded several prizes due to its high standard.
The Lions Club of Raglan would like to thank the community for braving the weather to make the Annual event another success. To the participants for participating and the effort they put in to show the community and the visitors to Raglan. To the WDC for their support in the prize money and to my fellow Lions for helping make the event memorable.
Have a Happy New Year
President Bob MacLeod
