On Monday morning, Raglan residents reported a brief flurry of light snow across the town from Whale Bay to Wainui Reserve, in Bow Street and across to Lorenzen Bay. The snow soon melted as it was folowed by a glimpse of sun. Strong southerlys kept temperatures in single digits during the day.
MetService head forecaster Peter Kreft said the polar blast was “a 50-year” event. “It’s a once-in-many-decades event. We are probably looking at something like – in terms of extent and severity, maybe 50 years,” he said. Strong southerlies and sunny weather are forecast for Tuesday. Blue Skies Weather forecaster Tony Trewinnard said howling Antarctic southerly winds would continue to create blizzard-like conditions through to Wednesday, especially above about 200m.
HEAVY SWELLS EXPECTED
MetService said to expect more heavy swells of five metres or more on the Tasman Sea around the Raglan coastline. The swells should reach their peak on Tuesday.
